About Crooks Lab Research
Our laboratory is dedicated to understanding the biology of infectious human pathogens to develop new strategies for preventing and treating disease. While our primary research focuses on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, we also investigate a diverse range of clinically relevant bacterial pathogens. By combining microbiology, molecular genetics, host–pathogen biology, and computational approaches, we seek to uncover vulnerabilities that can be exploited for therapeutic intervention. Through interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in chemistry, biology, and medicine, we help design and evaluate novel antimicrobial compounds to address the growing global challenge of drug resistance. Our mission is to translate fundamental discoveries into innovative therapeutics that improve human health.
A central theme of our work is understanding how pathogens respond to chemical stress at the genetic and physiological levels. We use sequencing‑based approaches, including whole‑genome sequencing, RNA‑Seq, and transposon sequencing (Tn‑Seq) to map microbial responses, identify essential pathways, and pinpoint stress‑induced vulnerabilities that can guide drug discovery. These high‑resolution tools allow us to connect gene function to phenotype and to uncover mechanisms that traditional assays often miss.
As a research group at a primarily undergraduate institution, we are deeply committed to hands‑on student training. Undergraduate researchers play an active role in experimental design, data generation, and computational analysis, gaining experience with modern molecular techniques and next‑generation sequencing workflows. Our students collaborate not only within the lab but also with partners across our university and external institutions, building scientific networks and contributing to interdisciplinary projects.
Beyond our core research, the Crooks Lab strives to foster a collaborative, curiosity‑driven environment where students develop the skills, confidence, and scientific independence needed for careers in microbiology, biotechnology, medicine, and beyond.
